The Infinity Broadcasting station is inviting podcasters to submit content for broadcasting. The station plans to get all its programming from podcasts. The station will be broadcast in the San Francisco area on 1550 KYCY-AM, and streamed worldwide via KYOURADIO.COM. "We envision KYOURADIO as a station for the people. We think you have something to say and we want to hear it," notes the announcement at the site. "You're out there creating, riffing, ranting and raving and Infinity is going to give voice to your vision." KYOU Radio will not be podcasting, according to the site, just rebroadcasting podcasts. "You cannot download Podcasts on kyouradio.com. Instead tune in to 1550 KYCY-AM or click Listen Live." Commentsthe more I think about, the more idiotic it sounds. Streaming, broadcasting podcasts on AM?? Being the first 'podcast-based station in the world' doesn't say much at all when you make a distribution u-turn, hence ignoring the whole point of podcasts: listening to whatever you want, WHEN you want and without having to tune in. And: We all know where the standards and guidelines led us...right, to podcasting. Posted by: mindcaster at April 27, 2005 02:59 PM A podcaster mailing list says that the agreement while not mutually exclusive of you continuing your podcast also makes them the sole entity that can broadcast the particular podcast segment you send up. This was found by one podcaster who has a podcast that is already broadcast on two noncommercial stations (those usually found in the 88-92 part of the FM dial). So if he were to be broadcast via KYCY, then he could not have his show broadcast anywhere else other than that station and his podcast feed. Posted by: James W. Anderson at April 27, 2005 06:18 PM I'm general in agreement with mindcaster's comments. I'm a bit more concerned with thier positioning statement as "Open Source Radio." On the face of it, it sounds fine, but it looks to me like they're planning on using the podcast community to get free programming with no licensing fees attached and turning it around for advertising sales. I did go ahead and register because I do see this as another avenue to promote podcasts. "Heard on KYOU Radio" can be a marketing draw. But I'm concerned that I didn't see how they plan to promote the podcasts other than playing them on the air. Neither the registration nor the upload forms provided boxes to include websites or rss feed addresses. Although I have to admit, some of those podcast addresses would be a nightmare to announce. In short-- if you want to do this, walk into it carefully. Posted by: Aarg at April 27, 2005 07:52 PM This is completely new territory...but until there's competition for a limited supply of good quality podcasts, expect podcasters to get a raw deal. Posted by: jlewin Whatever podcasting or radiocasting idea KYCY has been dropped for, will rank right "down" there with that infamous decision to drop Coke for New Coke. And then the same dummies tried to cover that mistake by giving us Classic Coke. Pepsi loved it! The radio station (in the San Francisco area) that picks up Don Imus is going to love it too. Posted by: Steve Salisbury at May 19, 2005 12:19 PM Please bring Don and Mike back. We can all use some humor with all the bad news out there. Repeats at night for us working people would be great. Posted by: John Saunders at June 8, 2005 04:29 PM One morning on my way to work I turned on Don Imus and found instead a bunch of odd music being played by some clearly non-professional guy. So this is podcasting? I'm not eager for more. Did anyone pick up Imus? Posted by: Anne Infeld at July 2, 2005 11:01 AM Post a comment |
