BitPass Unplugged Lets Podcasters Charge by the Podcast

May 12, 2005

BitPass has announced BitPass Unplugged, a new service that will give content providers the ability to charge for their podcasts. The company will present a preview of BitPass Unplugged at Streaming Media East 2005 at the Hilton New York starting May 17th, 2:45 p.m. ET, Booth 209.

BitPass Unplugged will allow podcasters to offer a-la-carte and subscription-driven premium podcasts. BitPass plans to have the service available in Q4 2005.

"BitPass gives me the flexibility to charge a small amount for that feed," notes David Lawrence, host of Online Tonight and The David Lawrence Show. "I've been waiting for this."

"With our solution, successful podcasters can look forward to new revenue sources without becoming submerged by the costs of catering to their audiences," said Kurt Huang, Vice President of Products, BitPass.

Quick, someone try to name three things David Lawrence doesn't want to make money off of.

Many probably wonder if this guy would just love to find a way to put the air we breathe on the radio and sell it back to us.

Not sure who's forcing you to buy anything from me, but you do what you want for free and what you want for a paycheck, and I'll do the same. 50 cents or less ($7 for all shows in a month, $60 for all shows in any year, some 200 or more) for a 3 hour show that clocks in at 31 megs to cover my bandwidth is a very small price to pay - I was pushing 14 terabytes a month when it was free, and my advertisers couldn't care less about the online audience, so they weren't paying me any extra. So forgive me for not wanting to lose my ISP or my shirt because I'm popular.

It's pretty interesting that people need to anonymously bash others for getting paid for what they do for a living. I'm sure McDonald's insists on paying you for your french frying services. :) And by the way, my podcast, which I produce every night after my show, is free, and always will be - no advertising either. My paying customers are asking for my show to be podcatchable, and that's why I'm loving the new BitPass schema.
