Infinity Yanks Steve Dahl Podcast Over Podcasting Legal Issues

May 06, 2005

steve_dahl.jpgThe Steve Dahl podcast appears to be the first major podcast felled by concern over copyright laws.

In a message at Dahl's site, the popular Chicago broadcaster notes "As usual, I discover all of the things that you can’t do after doing them first."

Dahl is suspending the posting of daily podcasts and downloads for his show. Concerns over copyright issues led to the move. Dahl explains that "podcasting is not currently considered 'streaming' and is not covered under Infinity ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC licenses or under the statutory streaming license."

Steve Dahl fans can look forward to a live streaming version of the show, along with a edited "Best of" podcast.

He notes "I have every assurance from the powers that be at Infinity Radio, that they are trying to get this podcasting thing figured out and that the streaming is a reality. So, I’m going to let them do what they need to do, and I look forward to looking forward."

His rebroadcast of his regular radio show as a podcast was cancelled, apparently because of the musical content. But Steve also has a podcast only program. It is terrific. Dave Winer pointed it out in Scripting news last week. Find Steve's podcasting as http://pbcliberal.users.blogmatrix.com/podcasts/
It is first class material.

Was he playing music on his show? Or did the station own the righs to it? I'm confused as to where the law was broken.

I did a little looking around at the url Charlie referenced, above... That blog/podcast, called "Just My Opinion," is a good one -- but it isn't Steve Dahl. Apparently, there was some sort of mix-up at Scripting News?

See http://pbcliberal.users.blogmatrix.com/podcasts/2005/05.02/0000/# for a little more on the confusion. :-)

Anyhow, Steve Dahl's website is http://www.dahl.com/ . There's a little blurb on there about the suspension of the podcasts and downloads. Sigh.

Oh, and I just saw that PBCLiberal's link is updated on Dave Winer's blog, too.

The real fact of the matter is that the advertisers have to get there ads in and if you could fast forward you could skip the ads just like TIVO that what they dont want an ad free show just imagin that I would have to listen to crap in between the show! Sorry lettuce entertain you and lobster gram blah blah too much white noise in radio!
