Jobs Announces iTunes Support for Podcasts

May 23, 2005

iPod.jpgApple CEO Steve Jobs has announced that iTunes 4.9 will include integrated podcast support. The update will let users browse and download podcasts.

At the D: All Things Digital Conference, an annual technology conference sponsored by the Wall Street Journal, Jobs discussed the popularity of podcasting, and said that the next version of iTunes would support them directly.

"Already millions of people are subscribing to these podcasts,'" noted Jobs. "This is going to send it into orbit."

If you do a music podcast and put it up for downloading, do you have to pay royalties on it as if you were streaming?

If you're doing it yourself, obviously there's nobody else to pay royalties to!

If it's someone else's music, well, that's just uploading MP3s you don't own...

my sister is thinking about creating a weekly podcast of mainstream music and her as a 'public radio like' host. glancing at her cd collection, my guess is that she would include big time artists like Bare Naked Ladies, k.d. lang, they might be giants, etc. she wants to do a fifty minute show each week. what kind of cost would she have to factor in to pay royalties for a 'shoe box' non profit music show? i've been to the ascap and bmi websites but i don't speak 'lawyer' and can't quite grasp their terminology. i want her to be by the book and want royalties to be paid but I am hoping there is a low budget way to allow mainstream music enthusisiasts to do home grown shows. Hope you can help. - Thanks - Velcro
