Updated Shrook Automates Podcast Support

May 12, 2005

Shrook, a next-generation news reader for the Apple Macintosh, made by developer Fondant Fancies, was released in an updated version earlier this week. Shrook v2.2 supports all versions of RSS, and the latest draft of Atom.

Shrook purports to be "the only major Mac newsreader with fully automated podcast support." When Shrook encounters a podcast, it is downloaded and added to iTunes. When the user's iPod is connected, iTunes copies the audio, and Shrook downloads the text content of all the feeds to read on the iPod screen, complete with links to access the audio.

The Shrook program synchronizes content without the Sync button, every five minutes while the user is connected to the Internet. This news reader also fetches news without the user's Mac, enabling the user to log in from any web browser, to view all of his/her channels from other locations.

With Shrook, new items appear on your desktop as soon as five minutes after they were published. The developer attributes this speedy update time to Shrook's "sophisticated Distributed Checking mechanism.".

Shrook v2.2 requires Mac OS X v10.3 or v10.4. The free trial, available on the Fondant Fancies website (url above), is fully functional for 30 days. Users must register and pay $24.95 to continue use of the product.

NetNewsWire has offered fully automated Podcast support for months now.

Interesting. Although, you might be interested to know that the next version of Net NewsWire has great support for podcasting. I've got the beta and it's pretty great. Not sure what qualifies as "fully automated" but it seems to be that as well.

It's good to hear that newsreaders are making it easier for people to pull down podcasts.
