When a Chinese blogger attempts to post a message to MSN spaces containing terms such as "democracy", "Dalai Lama", "Falungong", "4 June" (the date of the Tiananmen Square massacre), "China + corruption", or "human rights", a warning message is displayed: "This message contains a banned expression, please delete this expression." "Following Yahoo!, here is a second American Internet giant giving way to the Chinese authorities and agreeing to self-censorship", the worldwide press freedom organisation said. "The lack of ethics on the part of these companies is extremely worrying. Their management frequently justifies collaboration with Chinese censorship by saying that all they are doing is obeying local legislation." The Chinese version of the MSN portal, along with the blog tool, were launched as a joint venture with a local state-controlled company, Shanghai Alliance Investment Ltd (SAIL). via Reporters Without Borders: Microsoft censors its blog tool CommentsNot so unbelievable: Microsoft and Democracy have never quite gotten it together, have they? How Microsoft got away with their 'Windows Product Activation' has always been beyond me. In todays world nobody, but nobody, actually owns a copy of XP - they are all rented from Microsoft. We are permitted a maximum of 3 activations on our supposedly purchased product. We fork over hundreds of dollars/euros of hard-earned cash, basically paying Micorsoft for putting us under their big fat thumb, so this recent developement does not surprise me. Microsoft requisition peoples personal HDD space without ever asking permission - anyone can verify this, anyone with Windows on their PC that is, and some HDD Partitioning software. The point is that they've been getting away with such things here in the west for the past 5 or 6 years so it only stands to reason that they would welcome the behaviour of the Chinese Government - whose tendency for megalomaniac control is right up Bill Gates' alley. Posted by: Alan at June 18, 2005 08:00 AM i am a chinese blogger.it's disgusting when i first registered the MSN Space and noticed that a line in the policy reads "all contents would be censored..." But what can I say? a company wants to make money in our country and he can't turn agaist our goverment. you'd better blame the goverment but not MS. maybe the only way that can save us from censorship is just foreign company's entrance in to our country....MS is more than welcomed even thought it is sometimes unpleasant. In a country that most people do not care much about censorship, what'r really important is that the people's thought should be converted or waked. and business from foreign country can help us on that.
