Blog Reveals Bush Advisor Rove Exposed CIA Agent's Identity

July 02, 2005

Karl_Rove.jpgIn a post at The Huffington Post weblog, senior MSNBC political analyst and Former Chief of Staff Lawrence O'Donnell asserts that Karl Rove, George W. Bush's chief political advisor, is the confidential source that revealed the identify of Valerie Plame as a CIA "operative".

"Karl Rove was Matt Cooper's source," states O'Donnell. "I have known this for months but didn't want to say it at a time that would risk me getting dragged into the grand jury."

If the revelation turn out to be accurate, "RoveGate" may join other recent controversies as tests of the power of blogs, podcasts and other Internet media to force stories into the mainstream news.

Karl Rove: Traitor for Politics?

Many have suggested that Plame was outed by the White House in retaliation for her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, charging that the Bush administration lied to the American people about US intelligence concerning weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Wilson had been sent to Niger to investigate documents that implied Iraq had attempted to illegally purchase uranium. Wilson reported to the CIA and the State Department that the information was "unequivocally wrong" and that the documents had been forged. The discredited information was used in the President's State of the Union address to support his Weapons of Mass Destruction case against Iraq.

In early October 2003, Newsweek reported that Rove had called MSNBC Hardball host Chris Matthews and told him that Wilson's wife was "fair game". White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters at the time that any suggestion that Rove had played a role in outing Plame was "totally ridiculous."

Because of the confidential nature of Plame's role, it's unknown whether any lives were lost as a result of her outing. At a minimum, her exposure eliminated her value as a CIA operative. The exposure of a covert government agent would violate the Intelligence Identities Protection Act, carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Google Search Revealed Yellowcake Forgeries

According to an article on the forged "Yellowcake" documents at WikiPedia, it took International Atomic Energy Agency officials only a matter of hours to determine that the documents Wilson had discredited were fake. Using little more than a Google search, IAEA experts discovered indications of a crude forgery, such as the use of incorrect names of Niger officials. As a result, the IAEA reported to the U.N. Security Council that the documents were "in fact not authentic."

Vincent Cannistaro, the former head of counterterrorism operations at the CIA and the intelligence director at the National Security Council under Ronald Reagan, has suggested that "The documents were fabricated by supporters of the policy in the United States. The policy being that you had to invade Iraq in order to get rid of Saddam Hussein..."

Worse than Watergate?

Wilson charged that his wife's CIA association had been deliberately exposed by the White House in order to destroy her career, in retaliation for his public charge that the Bush administration had lied to the American people about U.S. intelligence concerning weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. In an article in The New York Times on 6 July 2003, Wilson denounced the Bush administration, saying that "some of the intelligence related to Iraq's nuclear program was twisted to exaggerate the Iraqi threat."

In an article at Salon, John Dean, counsel to President Nixon, has stated "In blowing the cover of CIA agent Valerie Plame to take political revenge on her husband, Ambassador Joseph Wilson, for telling the truth, Bush's people have out-Nixoned Nixon's people. And my former colleagues were not amateurs by any means."

This is another case of bloggers doing a better job than corporate controlled media when it comes to reporting. The "New Media" is not what Rush Limbaugh describes, but bloggers, podcasters, and honest non- drug abusing talk show hosts like myself, outing the Bush administrations dishonesty.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes mainstream media to get on point, and take this revelation to the masses. Karl Rove should be charged with treason and convicted for this. It is a violation of the law, and no one should be above the law.

We'll have to hear Rove's side of the story. My guess is that even if he is a traitor, he is smart enough to covered his tracks somehow.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to take the administrations word at face value, between the revelations of insiders like Wilson, the Downing Street memos, and this sort of story.

In discussions at Gnomedex, we heard over and over that podcasters and bloggers felt like there was a need to bring accountability to government and to the media. It will be interesting to see what happens with this story.

I find it ironic that the left complains about 'corporate' controlled media. You would be hardpressed to find more than a handful of non-biased or right-wing media outlets, even today.

Even funnier is the self indulgent crowd (bloggers, podcasters, etc....) who actually believe they have anything relevant to say on any issue. The vast majority of bloggers and podcasters are no differant than the "pirate radio" of the 70s, and BBS operators of the 80s, and webcasters of the 90s.

Get over yourself. Just because the leftist outlets won't spew your biased and skewed points of view, is hardly a reason to annoint yourselves the 'saviors' of media.

Get out of the echo chamber and get a life.

Oh and how is that when a radical left winger says Karl Rove did something, you 'people' just suck it up? Gullable, or just desparate to feed your hatred. Not that any of you care, but Valerie Plame WAS NOT an undercover agent or ANY sort. Her identity was known well over a decade ago. Why don't you ask her why she helps her husband get a job for which he was not even remotely qaulified for. But you don't care about that, since you can't hate Bush if you ask those questions. Hypocrites.

Oh and BTW, how did bloggers beat the mainstream press? I read this two days before the blog put it out. Oh yeah, arrogance got in the way or is it Bush hatred?

Posted by: John Q. Public at July 5, 2005 03:04 AM

John Q

Why is it that you're spewing bile about people being self-indulgent, biased, desparate and arrogant? Who said anything about hating Bush? It sounds like you are a small, petty thinker.

Why is it that you assume that anybody that discusses the Rove issue is "left".?

Most Americans don't like being lied to, and it's obvious now that Bush has been lying to us. Most Americans are starting to wonder why we're spending all this money in Iraq when there's a war on terror we should be fighting. If you haven't figured this out after there are no WMD in Iraq, after the Downing Street Memo reveals that the British thought that Bush was going to "fix" the evidence to make it look like there were, and after the majority of Americans are wondering why we're in Iraq, you're starting to look a little slow.

If Bush's right-hand man is a traitor to the country, then it's pretty obvious that we're being manipulated by our own government.

And why are you more interested in name calling than the facts?

You say that Joseph Wilson wasn't qualified. He's a former Ambassodor with high-level security clearance. And if that isn't qualification, why did the administration send him?

And why does is matter what Plame's job was at the CIA? It was classified, and it's crime against America to reveal classified information.

"John" - why do you want to be an apologist for acts of treason?

Since it looks like Bush lied to Americans, and it looks like his right-hand man is a traitor, the sensible thing for Americans to do is to hold them accountable. Maybe then we could get a legitimate conservative in place, instead of a borrow-and spend wannabe.
