Mainstream media is SO over Godcasting. Sure, there are hundreds of podcasts about religion and spirituality. There are Christian podcasts, Buddhist podcasts, Mormon podcasts, new age podcasts, pagan podcasts, athiest podcasts and even a podcast about the occult. They had their 15 minutes, and the mainstream media has moved on. They've moved on to iPod porn, and it looks like they are going to stay there for a while. From Australia to Washington, coverage of the video iPods quickly moves from how cool the screen is, and how you can watch video on it, to the fact that, (surprise!), you can download adult content and watch it in the palm of your hand. Mainstream media is crazy about iPod porn:
We've covered a few iPod porn stories at Podcasting News. We reported it when Podfather Adam Curry predicted a podcast porn explosion. We mentioned some of the controversy that adult iPod content was creating. And there was the juicy headline, Video iPods Going From Hot to Steamy. Adult content is part of the world of podcasting, so we'll cover it, when it is newsworthy. Here's my rocket science take on iPod porn:
That's the scoop! So next time you see a mainstream headline like Have Porn, Will IPod, remember that there are hundreds of other interesting, innovative things that people are doing with podcasts. We'll be doing our best to cover them. CommentsI really don't think the mainstream media has gone "iPod Porn Crazy". The media picks up stories that will attract readers/viewers, and then runs with them until they "play out" -- when the next attractive story comes along. Whether it's a terrorist bombing, a natural disaster, a successful or unsuccessful supreme court nominee or the first indictment of a White House official in over 130 years, the media will follow a story intensely for perhaps a few days and then move on. Just as once there was a flurry of "Godcast" coverage that ran it's course. Not to worry. Just as the DVD player, Internet, VCR, satellite and cable boxes are all capable of delivering pornographic content these devices and services are not used in the mainstream for that sole purpose. The same will be true for this first generation video iPod and generations to follow -- they all will be used to play porno films and clips, to be sure, but other content that people enjoy will also populate that hard disk in a big way. I'm sure Podcasting News will continue to bring us iPod-related new of interest without censorship and present such news without bias in the spirit of professional journalism. Whether the iPod is used to deliver content regarding engine oil changes or porno, I think I can rely on Podcasting News to tell me about it.
