SolidSpace debuted its podcasting capability in a partnership with WSMW-FM in Greensboro, N.C., an adult contemporary music station owned by radio network giant Entercom Communications Corp. WSMW has been posting podcasts from its popular weekday morning drive-time program "The Wicker Show" since late summer. It posts as many as four to five segments a day. The segments range in time from under a minute to 10 minutes. Topics include comic parodies by host Jeff Wicker, interaction with listeners and man-on-the-street stunts. WSMW staff packages up the content and forwards it through links to SolidSpace, which hosts the content in its state-of-the-art data center in Winston-Salem, N.C. "The software-as-a-service format isn't just the wave of the future - it's here, and podcast hosting is just a natural extension of the benefits thousands of other corporate users are leveraging worldwide," said Jim Capps, president of SolidSpace. "Our podcast hosting service gives radio stations the ability to do what they do best - create content that drives listenership and advertising dollars - and leaves the back-end processing to us." "Podcasting was just another opportunity for us to interact with our audience," said WSMW Program Director Michael Bryan. "If they missed something unusual that happened in the show, they can go back and check it out on our Web site. Some other radio stations run the best snippets of the week on the weekend, but on our site listeners don't have to wait that long. It's an on-demand world, and we're giving them what they're demanding." Bryan said the SolidSpace service's ease of use enabled WSMW staff to set up the podcast links in a matter of hours. Source: SolidSpace CommentsOh, this is such a junk! Here's one of the companies trying to cashing on a hype. Just but slapping a "Podcast" pefix onto their LOWER than adequate hosting package! You can find million times better hosting packages for third of the price! And the VERY primitive "tools" they provide for "managing your podcasts" are just ... well primitive - you can find better scripts online and put a site together yourself. Man this is just disgusting! Beware of cons like this!. Posted by: tellman at November 23, 2005 11:22 AM Yes, it had to take Entercom to break the ice, but it's possible that independents will follow suit. It may even be possible for small operations like college radio or the new 'low power FM' radio service (calls always end in -LP, an example of such a station is KCMA-LP, which is in Payson AZ on 98.5 and airs classical music). They could provide content for people to take with them outside their coverage areas, which in the case of low power FM is only about 2-5 miles. College radio will really benefit from this although some of the stations are larger and carry over a larger area.
