Free Script for Analyzing Podcasting Log Files

February 10, 2006

Andy Armstrong, host of the Mojo Crash podcast, has released a free PERL script designed to analyze podcast server log files and provide charts and statistics, tailored to podcasting.

Charts include Downloads by Day; Downloads by Country; Bandwidth by Day, Week and Month; Downloads by Show; and information on when individual podcasts were first downloaded and their most recent download.

"I created Podalyzer after analysing my podcast logs with a regular web analysis tool and realising that it wasn't capturing the information I needed," said Armstrong.

Requirements:

Podalyzer requires a recent version of Perl (5.8.3 or better).

In addition, users must:

  • have a web server that produces log files in Common Log File or Extended Common Log File formats
  • have access to those log files
  • to run Podalyzer have the following Perl modules installed:
    • HTML::Entities
    • GD::Graph
  • to have stats analysed by country have the following Perl modules installed:
    • Geo::IP
  • to run Podfeeder have the following Perl modules installed:
    • XML::Parser
    • LWP::UserAgent

Podalyzer is available at Hexten.com.
