Underwater MP3 Player Uses Bone Conduction

A final year design student at Brunel University (UK) has created an underwater MP3 player. The underwater music machine, dubbed 'Soundwaves' has won inventor Sam Jones an AOL Broadband Innovator Award.

Soundwaves uses 'bone conduction' technology, which when placed on both temples allows sound to be heard inside the users' head in all conditions, including when fully immersed in water. Vibrations from the MP3 device are passed safely through the skull to the inner ear, bypassing the outer ear.

Tao Wireless MP3 Player

Tao has introduced what they are calling the first wireless media player.

The Tao Wireless Media Player is designed to make it easy to download content over wireless hotspots from the Internet, from the PC to device and between units. The Tao automatically locates and accesses hotspots to let users download content. The player also lets store, access and organize content in whatever manner they wish.

New Sony Car Reciever Ready for MP3s

Sony has introduced an AM/FM CD/MP3 receiver capable of storing up to 500 MP3 tracks and receiving music directly from a computer.

100 iPod-Killer Wannabees R.I.P.

Over 100 small and medium-sized MP3 music player factories have closed in China over the past few months.

"In Shenzhen only, three brands of MP3 players die out silently per month on average," Jia Yaoyong, general manager of the north China branch of the Dazhong Electronic Appliance Company, was quoted as saying.

Two years ago, there were at least 300 MP3 player brands in the domestic market. The figure has declined to around 100, said Jia.

Oakley Intros Updated MP3 Sunglasses

Oakley has introduced a new way to listen to podcasts and other MP3 files - the Oakley Thump 2 sunglasses.

Apple Faces Lawsuit over iPod nano Scratches

iPod nano owners angry about what they say is the iPod nano screen’s tendency to scratch easily have filed a class-action lawsuit against Apple Computer, saying they want their money back plus a share of the company’s profits on the music player’s sales.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of nano owner Jason Tomczak and others who have purchased the device. The lawsuit alleges Mr. Tomczak rubbed a paper towel on his nano’s face and "that alone left significant scratches."

The Future of MP3 Players

IDC, a technology research firm, is predicting that the the portable compressed audio (MP3) player market will grow from 26.4 million units shipped worldwide in 2004 to nearly 124 million units in 2009. They also expect flash-based player capacities to grow to 16 GB by 2007.

"Demand for portable MP3 players is booming, as more and more consumers get acquainted with their stylish form factors and digital audio functionality," said Susan Kevorkian, program manager, Consumer Markets: Audio at IDC. "In addition, DVD players, mobile phones and gaming devices that play back compressed audio will be key drivers of the compressed audio player market during the forecast period."

ipod_nano.jpgApple has been dogged by complaints about iPod nano screen scratches and cracks since the latest version of the iPod was released. Apple has acknowledged that manufacturing problems have affected a number of nanos, and will replace nanos with defective screens.

Because Apple is replacing nanos with cracked screens, but not scratched screens, some are suggesting that the best way to get your scratched nano fixed it to just crack it.

"Fans who were expecting an iPod-style handset are likely to be disappointed," notes BBC Technology Editor Alfred Hermida. "The Motorola mobile is no iPhone. There is no click-wheel on the front, no hard drive to store thousands of songs and no fast connection to transfer songs from the computer."

First Gas-Powered MP3 Player

Toshiba Corporation has developed two prototype direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) units and begun tests to validate their operation with mobile audio players. Each unit integrates the DMFC that Toshiba announced in June 2004, the world's smallest, bringing its practical use a major step closer.

The prototype players include components related to the fuel-cell testing and are W35mm x L110mm x D20mm (flash memory) and W65mm x L125mm x D27mm (HDD) with the fuel cell units. These sizes can be reduced substantially by removing the extra components and applying optimal design for commercial products.

SIRIUS Intros a Wearable Satellite Radio

The S50 measures 1.9 by 3.9 inches and 0.7 inches thick, and includes a color display and voice-assisted channel navigation. When attached to a home dock, car dock or executive docking station, the S50 provides easy access to live content, and captures and stores both scheduled and unscheduled SIRIUS programming. Motorola iTunes Phone Secrets Revealed

Apple Merges iPod & iPod photo Lines

iPod.jpgApple has announced that the iPod and iPod photo lines are merging, creating a single line of white iPods that all feature color displays with the ability to view album artwork, photos and play slideshows in color.

The simplified iPod lineup features a 20GB model, holding up to 5,000 songs priced at just $299 and a 60GB model, holding up to 15,000 songs priced at $399. HP has added the Apple iPod mini to its line of digital music players.

The Apple iPod mini from HP is available in two models: the 4 gigabyte (GB) version holding up to 1,000 songs and the 6 GB version holding up to 1,500 songs.

New Apple iPod photo Models

Sonos Digital Media Systems Shipping

Sonos has announced it is shipping the Sonos Digital Music System to pre-order customers in the United States. The Sonos Digital Music System is the first multi-zone digital music system with a wireless, full-color LCD screen controller.
