silent_universe.jpgA new podcast, Silent Universe, is described as the "First Interactive iPod Drama." The podcast is a Sci-Fi drama with a "choose your own adventure" twist. Listeners will be able to guide the storyline by giving ideas and feedback through the podcast's site.

Fans will be able to participate directly in the story development process, working with the production team by offering critiques and suggestions in the online forums. This kind of "open" storytelling will encourage listeners of the podcast to get invested in the podcast. The producers aim to turn listeners from a passive audience to active partners in the series.

Podcaster Wichita Rutherford on a Roll

Podcaster Wichita Rutherford is on a roll.

Rutherford is the host of the 5 Minutes with Wichita podcast, which features interviews with country and bluegrass stars. He's made the jump to satellite, hosting Nothing New Here and Wichita Rutherford's GrooveGrass Show on Sirius Satellite Radio. In November, he released a video podcast "documentary", Van Heffer, which tells the tale of an an effeminate Elvis impersonator who performs bluegrass versions of Ozzy Osborne classics.

If that isn't enough to confirm Rutherford as the hardest working comedic bluegrass podcast host in show business, he's announced that he will be releasing his band's first album, Van Heffer, on iTunes.

A new video podcast by the American Society for Microbiology, Intimate Strangers: Unseen Life on Earth, explores the microbial world and how life has evolved over Earth's 3.8 billion-year history.

Intimate Strangers: Unseen Life on Earth features many well-known scientists, from Craig Venter, who led the way for mapping the human genome, to Carl Woese, who redrew the tree of life as we know it. Viewers will meet other scientists around the world, working to investigate the microbial world in diverse settings from a termite's stomach to a hospital operating room to the radioactive soil of Chernobyl.

New Site Offers Free Audio Books as MP3s

LibriVox takes public domain books and publishes them as audiobooks and a podcast.

LibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain, and the site publishes the audio files to the Net (podcast and catalog). The recordings are released as public domain works. A recent podcast features a reading of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas.

According to the site, "Our objective is to make all books in the public domain available, for free, in audio format on the internet. We are a totally volunteer, open source, free content, public domain project. "

The Pentagon is podcasting. The Pentagon Channel has added podcasting as a means of distributing the channel's military news and information targeted to the men and women in uniform.

"We are excited about leveraging technology that allows for more programming choices for our men and women in uniform," said Allison Barber, deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs. "Harnessing this new technology enhances our goal at the Pentagon Channel to communicate relevant, timely and credible military news and information to the men and women of the military."

Author and podcaster Scott Sigler's latest podcast audiobook serialization, Ancestor, looks like it's on track to repeat the success of his popular sci-fi thriller, EarthCore.

Podcasting offers authors like Sigler new ways of promoting their work and interacting with listeners. The EarthCore podcast generated thousands of subscribers and landed Sigler a print deal.

Guiding Light will offer daily episodes of Guiding Light, Lite, a ten-minute mini-episode highlighting one storyline a day. In a recent episode, Michelle reveals to Danny why she came back to town. Guiding Light, Lite will be followed by an interview with an actor from that storyline.
