Oregon Search Continues For SF Podcaster; Wife and Daughters Found

Dec 5th, 2006 | By | Category: General

Authorities are continuing their search of a remote area of southwest Oregon for CNET Senior Editor and podcaster James Kim. Kim, his wife Kati Kim, and their two young daughters disappeared nine days ago, while on a Thanksgiving weekend road trip.

At CNET, James Kim is a senior editor covering digital audio who also co-hosts a weekly video podcast for the Crave gadgets blog. He has been writing a book on Microsoft’s Zune MP3 player.

Kim’s wife and children were found Monday afternoon in a remote area near Bear Camp. The helicopter that spotted Ms. Kim, waving an umbrella, had been hired by the missing family’s relatives.

Ms. Kim and the two children, aged seven months and four years, were rescued Monday afternoon, and taken to a hospital for evaluation. The older daughter and her mother were released Monday evening, but were staying on with the younger child, who was being kept for observation.

[update: Baby Sabine has since been released, and the family has been moved to "an undisclosed location."]

James Kim left the car on foot two days ago to seek help and has not yet been found. When the provisions in the car ran low, Kati Kim sustained the little girls by breastfeeding them, even though the older girl had weaned. (Information about breastfeeding in emergency situations is here and here).

Approximately 40 state and federal personnel were searching remote area roads, according to Oregon police. Private resources hired by family members, including helicopters, have been assisting in the hunt, and friends and family have traveled to Oregon to join the search. Loved ones have also set up a Web site where the public can receive updates on the situation and share their support and encouragement.
