Apple iPad Doesn’t Live Up To The “Jesus Pad” Hype

Retrevo has announced results of a study done after the Apple iPad introduction, looking at consumer interest in buying the new iPad.
According to Retrevo, “Not only did Apple fail to convince new buyers, it may have lost many potential buyers who now say they don’t think they need an Apple tablet computer”
After the announcement, the percentage of people that were definitely not interested in the iPad jumped from 49% to 61%.
Success Of The iPad Doubtful?
Retrevo is skeptical about the prospects for the iPad, saying “Whether this device becomes a big hit is anyone’s guess but based on this study it sure looks doubtful.”
Retrevo’s analysis, though, seems to ignore the standard hype cycle that accompanies new technology introductions – which says that you’ll see a “Peak of inflated expectations” followed by a “Trough of disillusionment” before most people actually start to see the real value of new technologies.
A more revealing bit of data may be the percentage of people that “definitely” think they need an iPad, which jumped 66% after Apple’s announcement, from 3% to 5%.
If 5% of the iPad’s potential buyers “definitely” want one, based on limited information and before any apps are adapted for it, it’s going to be a hugely important new platform.
erm, if I were Apple I may not give a rat’s ass what the people that definately don’t want it think, when the people that will get one and the maybe’s percentage went up by a total of 3% since the demo.
This is a glass half full or half empty thing isn’t it?
