Description: The Lx7 podcast was born from the online blog of Vergel Evans as a forum to share his music, and the stories behind the songs. This part music / part musings podcast opens the doors on how the tracks are made, as well as why they came about.
Topics covered are mostly related to techno music, and social commentary in relation to Techno music. Show features include interviews with fellow Toronto artists, techno music, video clips from the studio, and an occasional surprise or two. So tune in, check it out,... you just might find it an interesting blend of music and musings.

I've peeled back the curtain to both introduce myself via podcast and share a new track I've been working on. It's my first time working a livePA on camera, and without a tripod it's an all handheld session. Hope you like techno......  
THEME:416 is a 17 track mixed DJ set of un-signed Toronto artists. The mix, inspired by the energy that is Toronto, is a glimpse at some of the music produced by like-minded Toronto artists. The level of production on each track is astounding. And although Toronto has never been considered a Techno Mecca, this and other products like it raise the opinion of what Toronto has to offer. This selection of tracks and the artists who created them are an example of true techno fans who lurk just off the radar. How do you like my podcast intro? Some ramblings on the importance of song names and the inspiration behind 2 songs I premier on the show. If you're curious to know the back story on the art that goes into creating a song; you'll definitely want to check this episode out. My lack of decent video editing software hasn't stopped me from making my first Podvert. I figured the intro music from my last episode (Lx7#003) was too good to not turn into something, so here's the result: a quick little Podvert / Promo Bumper / Video Intro. Purely, a low budget live recording that I did it in 3 takes. 1 for the drums, 1 for the synths and 1 for the vocals. Feel free to share it out. The pre "Why" show on what started me into the world of producing. (audio blog style) Live Demo of an electro beat I was messing with on the drum machine that'll be part of a yet to be recorded track called "Talk". Also a brief description on my mindset when I wrote Januarys End back in 1999. January's End was the first track I wrote that captured what I was feeling at the time. Plus a brief explanation on my fascination with Salsa beats in techno. It's just a quick and dirty little video podcast cause Himadri called me up and wouldn't take no for an answer! He came over to take me out for a beer... and check out this new setup I'm trying out. So he gives a quick shout out of a hello, takes me to some crazy club for a beer, and I'm back home within an hour. Only Himadri would be able to do that..... I'll spare you the story.. but check out the new setup.... I'm so hyped! There's nothing better then trying something out and finding out it works. Welcome to episode 6! I just recorded 15 minutes of me testing out some new music I made on the MPC. It's a different process then using my old hardware sequencer, but the results are just as exciting. Alittle back story on the Speedy J party and why it was so inspiring (see my blog for the Speedy J concert review). The plan is to be able to perform a set like this in front of ppl and have them enjoy it, dance, and maybe share in the magic. The actual performance is in the ./Studio section of my Lx7.ca website. Locked away in the studio for a couple of days learning to use the MPC and attempting to make it talk to the rest of the gear I came up with this dark deep liveset. It's a blend of old samples I'd collected over the years with patterns crafted on the 909 and improvised into a series of looping midi sequences. If you've seen the video, you know how I do it,... this liveset is the result. A little background on the whole Lx7 story...... where it came from and where it's at. Who, what, and why. Is it love? is it work? or is it something else? Also a call out for the 416 community to shout out where they're at. Arthur drops into the studio to share some classic 80's hits. We talk about the music we grew up on, and how they become part of our memories. We discuss music lyrics then and now, and check out a track he's releasing on Cratesavers. A bit of a departure from an all techno show, but a honest glimpse into what it's like to hang out with Arthur on any given weekend. Deep in contemplation and wondering.... what makes music live? A little talk about the trip to NYC. I demo a LivePA that Himadri and I recorded as Teste. What livePA? The one with promos of The Wipe Remixes mixed with elements from the studio, the 909, and a *phat* wad of beats! What is techno? Ha,... such an easy question to answer... electronic music right? maybe not. Let me ask the question and give you something to think about. Maybe classical music was the techno music of its time. Ever think of that? As an extension of the Lx7 podcast may I present: Assembler Techno Fanzine. The Direction Issue is my attempt and innovating my podcast beyond the computer. Use Adobe Acrobat 6 or better to view a PDF collection of articles and artwork by myself and friends. You don't need a video or mp3 player. Just print, read and share it out!.... Think about it, or make your own fanzine too. The project was inspired by the need to create, and do something different. A quick explanation on how the Assembler Zine came about, the wacky MPC vs the little QY700, and what the Detroit experience was like at this years DEMF. The background music is a prototype of my livePA for this Friday. Damn that techno music,...... 6 months in and I can't shake the feeling, nor do I want to..... *pure love* Created two new tunes as a result of my live PA (Trip Switch and Sticky Stones), so we give those a spin. Talk about the future and how Alvin Toffler would really enjoy today, because the future is here. My simple amazement at the concept of the network and how these podcasts are so counter culture. A review of the livePA I did last week, and more...... Tip of the hat to Shamus and Arthur for giving me all that support and giving me some things to think about. Trevor (from fun-in-the-murky.com and bleep radio) came into the city to hang out and we figured it would be fun to record a podcast. He's got a TON of knowledge related to the techno and the stories around the music, so we hang out listen to tracks and talk around the music. Lots of references to artists both local and international. Music that cross all genres in the background as well. Us in the studio talking and leaving the mic on. Wish I had 2 good mics instead of 1 good mic and 1 not so good mic. Look at this, the studio has officially been pimped! This video podcast is from the *new* studio. So get the first tour right here! Also, a glimpse behind the process of making a tune using the 909, MPC, and synths. Plus I play my newest tune live on camera. What is the difference between software and hardware? Absolutely nothing once you have the sounds you want to use and an idea in mind. That is exactly what this episode is about: Talk about the balance between using classic sounds and new ones. Plus alittle taste of what the 909 sounds like when I use the Nord Modular as an effects unit, and a new intro. 30 days without Internet can't stop this podcast from going live! Two new tunes to demo from the studio, talk on my simple amazement of following an idea. The tracks, Summer (LetsRunAway), and a Gravity Sessions traxx - Venus. Plus a couple of microphone confessional moments related to making music and the podcast. Talk, and my invitation, in creating a new DJ mix of indie techno. There's techno music, techno stories, and techno ideas inside this episode. As summer ends it also marks the 10 year anniversary of me making techno music. I've searched for my first 2 recorded songs to demo on the show. The rational on why I still do it, and the value of sharing the music. Also an early warning that the next show should be the 2nd issue of Assembler Techno Fanzine. This weeks episode is as much a surprise to me as you, but I have an explination. I've been able to do very little related to the fanzine; but I did manage to give the site a new look with added functionality. Plus as the proud owner of one of the most distracting studio tool yet, you'll have to see the video to fully understand. I demo a new track, fresh off the disk, and jump through hoops to show you just how excited I am about my new little world. As a follow up to the video, here is a 40 min dj set of most of the music I've created over the years as a dj mix. Most of these tracks are in the music section of the Lx7.ca site. Although the mixing isn't perfect but I was really feeling the vibe of the mix and didn't want to get overly technical and lose the feeling of the mix. Staying true to the tradition, I welcome Toronto artist Adam Marshall to the show for a 60 min. podcast on all things techno. We cover all the bases: his techno history, early pieces of hardware, software vs. vinyl, and some of those great stories about what brought him to where he's at today. Not only that, we end the show with a couple of tracks from his New Kanada label including a track from his upcoming EP - Naked(NK03). From the Orb to dub techno, right on up to today, sit in on our session as we talk it out. Don Berns (aka Dr. Trance) and I review some of the tracks, and stories on what started the Toronto rave scene. We recall those early events which kicked off the whole electronic music experience here in Toronto. Have you heard the track James Brown is Dead? Ever wonder where the Toronto rave scene started? Drop in, hang out, as we spend some time talking about _the beginning_. After a 4 week break from producing tunes the studio I take 2 minutes to review, collect and move forward. Also got new tracks to share, one has lyrics?!? the other has arpeggiated lead lines. Each track has it's story, but it's the rational and the theory that makes them interesting. Should a track have more then 5 elements playing at any one time? Grab a lab coat, because these tunes test that theory. We're 2 episodes from the 1 year Lx7 anniversary show, which is both exciting and scary! This week, Greg from the Weakest Beat challenged me to come up with an entry for the second season of his podshow. The resulting track is a departure from our normal prescription of techno but the challenge makes it worth it. In a similar vein I also demo an unfinished track called the Sirens, plus an FYI on an upcoming contest I had in mind regarding cellphones. Whenever the weather gets cold like it does here, I get a weirded out. I share the topic and idea of my first iMix called Cold Winter Rain. This episode is a certified ALL ELECTRO episode. 2 tracks with that electro sting. Lots of talk about this time of year and the strange energies of looking at the Toronto music scene from a pair of new eyes. Is this podcast based on the Seasonal Affected Disorder? I'm willing to bet on it. BTW: my appologies in advance but the audio isn't perfect. I'm trying to find a new VST plug-in for finalizing the show. If this episode had a musical theme, the musical theme would be 80's Synthpop. Each song of (these are definitely not tracks) have that overdub electronic feel that a lot of my favorite early electronic songs have. And with a musical influence inspired by the holidays; they aren't Christmas carols, but the stories behind the tunes sets the mood well. I also throw in a healthy dose of production technique on how each song was composed. Well worth the late nite sessions..... It's a new year and season 2 of the podcast, lets start the year right with a session version of my New Years PA. It's a 10 song set of music I've been working on over the past couple of months. Were you wondering why I didn't have a podcast up on the friday as normal? *THIS IS WHY!!!* It's 50+ minutes of me doing what I love to do across techno, electro, and even some break beat. Gear used: MPC4000 and Nord Modular G2. For mixing and all the EQ'ing I use the Stanton SA-5 mixer. So checkout the rhythms and the bassdrops... this set is about as live and impromptu as it gets. In this video episode I do a follow-up to the previous episode LivePA. I share the process on how I put it together, and speak to the idea of standardizing the process to make it easier to switch between patterns. It's a mix of music, information, and all round fun. It's been a slog of a week getting ready for this spring. Dedicated to you and me, all of us who make music, people who are tired of the the Music Industry, and are creating change. If you make music you *NEED* to listen to this show and get inspired! There is a different way to get the music out there.... we have the internet, and that's all we need. Record labels, as they are today, are dead. So lets kick them to the curb and get back to sharing music that we care about, that really speaks to who we are. In this episode I announce my first release for 2007. You can preview the release and more at Last.FM. Lx7 Promo Release is my first solo album. Written between 1997 to 2007 these songs are a stable backdrop to what has musically landed me here today. This album contains seven tracks of minimal techno / techhouse. Originally premiered on episode 27 of the Lx7 podcast, you can visit the website via the link inside the PDF. Every band has its members, and my studio band is no different. In this episode I breakdown the basic format on how I build a track. Starting with an idea, and filling out the elements to turn it into a filled out loop. If it were a math formula it would look somthing like this: Synth line idea + bassline + drums + bassline2 + filler sound = loop Does that sound crazy? It makes sense... it really does. Between the positive emails from people who've checkout the show, the un-ending nites in the studio, support from friends both IRL and on the internet, inspirations and conversations with my girlfriend Ann Marie.... it gives me great pleasure to share the results: my first album.
