Thanks Podcastingnews,

I think other podcasts should know that the "mistake" is only sort of "fixed".

After reading the news, we checked to see what Podshow did to our feed.

It looks like Podshow fixed the hijacked XML links, but it looks like they
"forgot" to do it for the WinAmp, Windows Media Player, and Realplayer
feeds, they must have "mistakenly" created during the process of "mistakenly" hijacking XML feeds .

We never asked for these feeds to be created for Next Big Hit New Music Mix,
or Next Big Hit Indie Insider. We weren't even aware of their existence
until we read the report about the XML feeds on podcastingnews.com.

They also didn't correctly link the iTunes logo to our music store URL.
That was probably an "accident" as well. I noticed they have made these
"mistakes" with other popular podcasts like Filmspotting, Cinecast, and
Keith and the Girl. I have not seen these "mistakes" on less popular shows
like most of the ones featured on their front page. In fact it looks like
they didn't take the time to make these "mistakes" on all of the shows
offered on podshow. This leads me to think these "mistakes" are manual;
and not a program bug. Under further investigation I came to realize these
mistakes were not made on the pages of the podcasts signed with podshow.
No similar links were on the Daily Source Code, Dawn and Drew, and
Accident Hash pages. I would have figured these links would have been on
their shows first. There's only one logical explanation for these links to
not be on the Podshow podcast pages, that I can come up with. I think they
purposefully intended to rewrite popular feeds in an attempt to gain
traffic, and possibly claim an increase in Podshow subscribers. It seems
like Adam Curry and the Podshow Circus Clowns thought that stealing
subscribers would be a better way to rip off podcasters, than the podshow
contract.

- David Shapiro
Next Big Hit

Popular non podshow podcasts have rewritten feed links for WMP, Winamp and Realplayer.

The podcasts that didn't have a large subscriber base looked like this show, which was featured on the front page of Podshow when I took the screenshot.

If they wern't trying to Hijack traffic, and it was in fact a simple mistake, the same types of links would probably have been on these pages 1st. It doesn't make sense to add rewritten links to shows you don't own, before adding it to shows you do own, unless you're trying to hijack subscribers.

Over at www.triyo.com we also supply streaming in asx, mpu and ram- not sure how podshow is doing it, I think they're working pretty hard to get it right, but I know we are simply putting the feeds directly into media player/real player/winamp via their respective streaming formats, so your feed access and DL stats will still reflect you getting listeners, even though them may be listening online.

Podshow have, to be fair, made a lot of changes over the last few days in response to community concerns, definately something interesting to keep an eye on.

I'm far from a large audience podcaster, but they've got the WMP, Winamp, and Real links on my page, too. How can I tell if they're copying the RSS feed or just pointing people to it? I'm guessing that they're doing something, because the WMP link is http://www.podshow.com/extfeeds/a2f951700db1ce0a061024b6f441e93f.asx, but I don't know enough about RSS and XML to be able to tell if they're doing anything. They also didn't link to my iTunes Music Store page (that link is on my site, though).

I also noticed that on my Podshow page, the iTunes affiliate links in the show notes don't work, but all the other links do. I guess if I'm not making Podshow money, they're not going to help me make any. I can live with that (I guess), but it's a bit of an irritation.

I checked www.triyo.com and they simply point to your feed. We wern't listed there but Keith and the girl was. I'll use them as an example

Keith and the girl hosts their feed on libsyn. This is their feed on libsyn:

http://shitecom.libsyn.com/rss

This link on Triyo redirects to their libsyn feed while offering it as a media player file. This is the right way to do things:

http://www.triyo.com/playlist.php?f=http%3A%2F%2Fshitecom.libsyn.com%2Frss&t=asx

This is the WMP link for Keith and the girl on podshow:

http://www.podshow.com/extfeeds/0371b1355bf9a2c4d9ad33835346bbdd.asx

Notice there is no link pointing to shitecom.libsyn.com

From what I've seen, this is a "mistake" new podcasting directories haven't made. This would barely be a believable mistake coming from an amateur who's trying to create a new directory. For podshow to claim that this is a "mistake", is simply not buyable. After all isn't Adam Curry supposed to be the podcasting guru? The Podfather? I think Adam blow dried his hair for too long, and now his brains are fried. How many more times are they going to get caught with their hands in the cookie jar, before they come up with a better excuses than "It's not what it seems", and "it was a mistake". Right now Adam Curry and podshow seem about as trustworthy as Michael Jackson at a Daycare. I suspect that they need to show that they aren't throwing their VC money in the toilet, and stealing subscribers numbers is a great way to show progress they aren't making themselves.

If you want to get a listing- you just have to pop your feed URL in the 'find' box, tick the 'ping' box and submit- then you're in, and have pinged the 60+ sites we have in the ping engine...bingo!
