I want to start my own podcast but I do not have enough money to have an ongoing podcast. I had an idea to find stores that have affiliate programs and link them to my website. If someone makes a purchase using my links I would make some money. But that willl only help me, what about other podcasters? Or how about other websites or blogs that are non-profit, why not help them to?

That is when I decided to build a website that will combine these ideas. The website would work like this. A podcaster, website or blogger would sign up at my website for free to get their own promotional code. They will have to let their readers, listeners, or visitors know if they are going to buy something online go to my website. If they see a store they are willing to buy from, they will have to click on it and enter your promotional code when asked to. They will be redirected to the store and if they buy something the podcaster gets some money. I finished building this website, the url is http://helpingtheweb.com please let me know what you think about this idea and the website. Thank you.

Maybe I'm just tired, but your idea and website just seem very complicated to me. Too much work ... I'm no dummy - I graduated from college with high honors and own a business!

Entering a promotional code, just too much ... people like quick fixes, not so much reading and so many steps.

Simple. Keep it simple. Perhaps this may help you to make it a little simpler. Good luck with your ideas!

Janet

I'm with you - no idea what's going on with this!

ra56179n - can you explain this any better? If you can, give us the rundown. You may also want to revisit your site and figure out if there's a better way to communicate what you're doing - it does seem confusing!

to shoresuccess, Okay I made the instruction a little bit more simpler and I do agree with you that the use of promotional code may not be a good idea. But there is no other way for me to know what fan is supporting what podcast. For example, if I'm a fan of podcast X and I want to help them out. I would go to helpingtheweb.com and enter the promotional code that is associated with podcast X to make sure any purchase I make they will get some money. If you have any ideas that will make this a lot more simpler I'm open to suggestions.

jlewin, it seems a little confusing but the concept is pretty simple. There are two layers to it. One for the podcaster and one for the fans/supporters.
1) for the podcasters: All they have to do is create an account and get a promotional code. On there website they are going to have say someting like " If you want to support us Go to helpingtheweb.com. Read the "Instructions For The Supporters". Use the promotional code XXXX" Here is a blog that is already doing this: http://wagi.wordpress.com/about/

2) For the supporter: All they would have to do is click a stores name. Before they are redirected they will be asked to enter a promotional code. They should enter the promotional code for the podcast they want to support to make sure that podcast will get some money.

I hope this makes it a little bit more easier to understand. If it doesn't let me know and i'll try to explain better. Thank you.

Look, I have a LOT of patience ... but if I bothered to go to your website ... BIG "IF" ... then I need to READ SO MUCH ... then asked for the PROMOTIONAL CODE and I would say ... "What? What promotional code? I don't remember ..."

YOU ARE MAKING THIS TOO HARD, TOO TIME CONSUMING ... nobody cares that much ... everyone is too busy!!!

Listen, there are ways to make IN TEXT LINKS that would automatically tell you which podcast is being supported! I'm no computer/internet genius, but I've read about it, seen it. You need to look into this, figure it out, MAKE IT SIMPLE SIMPLE SIMPLE as in NO THINKING! AUTOMATIC!

Sorry, but I used to be a teacher and now I work with adult business owners every day ... same thing ... no one wants to take too much time to THINK!

Your website is kinda boring, sorry again, but you need to make it SIMPLE and EXCITING ... use GRAPHICS and not so many words. I have an above average IQ but you need to appeal to the average very busy person if you want to be successful! Good luck.

The podcaster would place an IN TEXT LINK or LINKS on their blog or website.
It would send them to your website, but contain the podcaster's affiliate code ...
in other words, I'm saying that each podcaster would be YOUR affiliate!
Get it?

Look into setting up an affiliate program. Then sign up the podcasters FREE.
Then create IN TEXT LINKS.

An in text link is just that: A word or words within a sentence that someone clicks if interested (it's BLUE or BLUE & UNDERLINED).

Go to www.marketingvox.com. They use some in text links (not affiliate links, but it'll show you what it can look like.) I just went there and actually in the upper right article about GOOGLE, their in text links are black and underlined. I like blue better, but that's the idea.

shoresuccess, I took your advice and got rid of the promotional code stuff. Now alll a podcaster/blogger/webmaster will have to do is create an account to get their personal link and place it somewhere on their website.

All a fan/supporter will have to do is click on this personal link to be redireted to my website. If they buy something from any of the stores listed on my website using my links I will send some money to the website they want to support (the original link they clicked to get to my website)

Also if a fan/supporter comes directly to my website and clicks on any store they will be given a list of podcaster/blogger/websitest to support before being redireted to that store.

Let me know what you think about this. Remember this website I created is still in development so please give any amount of feedback so I can make it better. Thank you again shoresuccess for your advice, it was very helpful.

I'm so glad my advice was helpful to you and I'm wishing you MUCH success with your new venture.

You wrote this:
"Also if a fan/supporter comes directly to my website and clicks on any store they will be given a list of podcaster/blogger/websitest to support before being redireted to that store."

But this is where it slows down the process again. Imagine someone coming directly to your website NOT from a blog or website and wants to see what there is to buy. Hopefully you have specific categories like Jewelry, Cameras, Marketing Tools (whatever) ...
but then they FIRST see a list of podcasts/blogs/sites??? What???
CLICK, I'M OUTTA HERE.

But here's a better way ... somewhere on the HOME page (do not redirect to another page!) have a drop down menu they can go to IF THEY WANT TO to select from the list of blogs, sites, podcasts. Simple, not confusing ... drop down menu on the home page.
I hope this helps.

I was wondering, did you check out my website? I do let any user who comes directly to my website to see what I list. I only show them the list of podcast/blogs/website to support when they finally click on a store they want to buy from. I don't list products on my site just affiliated stores.

Yes, I checked out your website when I first read your post. Quickly, though, and that's when I wrote you that at first glance the site was confusing.

I haven't been back recently ... but I would imagine that cross-referencing would double and triple your sales (can you tell I've been in advertising and marketing for years!!!).

In other words ... here's a list of stores. OK, what can I buy there? That's another step, another bit of time to look.
But here's a list of stores ...
And HERE'S a list of general categories of items you can buy ...
OH GREAT! I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR A NEW NECKLACE!

Just a suggestion. Maybe not necessary, after all, you can keep improving and improving but things and people will never be perfect, right? Smile

Don't get me wrong, that was a great suggestion you made. I was actually thinking about that in the begining but It would have taken me too long to implement it. Maybe in the future.

You are so right about this. I'm still enhancing my website but first I have to get the word out.

Janet, actually, I am reading this and I think it is a good idea. What you need is a good ASP script and MySQL database to hold the affiliate codes and this would be the perfect way to track your affiliates on the podcast. You can give each affiliate and ID and tack on the affiliate ID to your URLs and mention these IDs in your podcast. It would work well using that method.

Tracking the affiliate code is not the problem here. The problem is convincing consumers that going to your podcast's site and clicking through three layers of redirection is the best way to buy a ladder or an inflatable boat.

I'm not convinced of that. This isn't a natural mode of shopping to me, and most of these products (hardware, industrial machinery, watercraft) aren't things I would buy online without significant research. How could I persuade anyone else to shop this way?
