Podcasts Battle for Top Spot

(Podcasting News, Des Moines, IA) - For the third straight month, Science@NASA  was the top podcast, according to Podcasting News, a leading source of information about podcasts and the podcasting community. The NASA podcast discusses everything from the weather on Saturn to going to the bathroom in space.

The NASA podcast led The Seanachai, a weekly show of off-center storytelling and commentary, and What's on Tonight?, a look at the future of media, to get the top spot. The podcasts have swapped places on the Podcasting News Top 10 list since March.

"The Podcasting News Top 10 Podcast list highlights some of the best podcasts available," notes Podcasting News' Elle Webb. "It also shows how diverse podcasting has already become. You can get news, comedy, storytelling and a variety of music shows, whenever and wherever they want to."

New to the April Top 10 Podcast list are:

• IT Conversations, which features discussions with tech leaders;
• On the Media, a weekly program from National Public Radio and WNYC, New York Public Radio ; and
• The Dollar Show,  a comedy show about sex, work, school, politics, and pure controversy.

Podcasting News ranks the popularity of podcasts based on the activity of visitors using the site's Podcast Directory. The Podcasting News directory is a user-edited collection of the best podcasts available. Visitors can preview podcasts within their web browser, and then add the podcasts that they like to a podcast client.

Podcasting is a technology for automatically distributing audio programs, typically in MP3 format, to portable digital audio players. Podcasts are rapidly becoming an important source of audio content on the web.

Podcasters create audio programs (podcasts) and save them to a web server. They also publish an XML-based news feed that lists their most recent shows.
