Indie Podcasts Make Comeback
(Podcasting News, Des Moines, IA) - Indie podcasts made a comeback on the Podcasting News Top 10 Podcast list in August, taking many of the top spots. Five of the top positions were held by indie podcasters. As recently as June, public radio podcasts and commercial podcasts dominated the list.
Tiki-Bar TV was the only video podcast in the Top 10. The cult favorite features "Swingin' bachelors and forbidden cocktails in a swank pad."
"Early in the summer, several trends pushed public radio podcasts and commercial podcasts to the top of the Podcasting News Top 10 Podcast list. There was a lot of pent-up demand for public radio podcasts, which generated a lot of interest and activity for these shows. The release of iTunes, along with media coverage of commercial podcasters, also generated a lot of interest in commercial podcasts," notes Podcasting News' Elle Webb. "Indie podcasters, though, are proving to be contenders and are fighting their way back to the top."

About the Podcasting News Top 10
"The Podcasting News Top 10 ranking is based on the number of requests each podcast in our directory receives," said Podcasting News' Elle Webb. "To the extent that Podcasting News visitors reflect podcast listeners as a whole, the Top 10 should be an accurate reflection of what podcasts people are interested in."
About Podcasting
Podcasting is a technology for automatically distributing audio programs, typically in MP3 format, to portable digital audio players. Podcasts are rapidly becoming an important source of audio content on the web.
Podcasters create audio programs (podcasts) and save them to a web server. They also publish an XML-based news feed that lists their most recent shows. Listeners can use podcast client software to subscribe to the podcast news feed, and the software will automatically download the latest shows and synchronizes them to a portable digital audio player. Listeners can then enjoy their personal mix of music, talk and other audio programming on their own timetable.
Podcasting was pioneered by developer Dave Winer and net entrepeneur Adam Curry. The technology has taken off as companies and individuals have found out how easy it is to share audio content using podcasting.
