FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Public Radio Podcasts Surge in Popularity
(Podcasting News, Des Moines, IA) - Public radio podcasts surged in popularity in June. On the Media, a program of NY Public Radio, jumped three spots to the number 4 position. Weekend America advanced two places, to number 3 on the Podcasting News Top 10 Podcast list.
Two public radio podcasts were new to the list, KCRW's To The Point, and Left, Right and Center. BBC Today also joined the list, highlighting the BBC's recent leap into podcasting. The new public radio podcasts bumped What's on Tonight?, Vinyl Podcast and The Dollar Show from the list.
"June was the strongest month ever for public radio podcasts. Half of the Podcasting News Top 10 Podcast list was public radio podcasts, with four NPR shows and one BBC show," notes Podcasting News' Elle Webb. "It's clear that there's pent-up desire for public radio shows on-demand."

About the Podcasting News Top 10
"The Podcasting News Top 10 ranking is based on the number of requests each podcast in our directory receives," said Podcasting News' Elle Webb. "To the extent that Podcasting News visitors reflect podcast listeners as a whole, the Top 10 should be an accurate reflection of what podcasts people are interested in."
About Podcasting
Podcasting is a technology for automatically distributing audio programs, typically in MP3 format, to portable digital audio players. Podcasts are rapidly becoming an important source of audio content on the web.
Podcasters create audio programs (podcasts) and save them to a web server. They also publish an XML-based news feed that lists their most recent shows. Listeners can use podcast client software to subscribe to the podcast news feed, and the software will automatically download the latest shows and synchronizes them to a portable digital audio player. Listeners can then enjoy their personal mix of music, talk and other audio programming on their own timetable.
Podcasting was pioneered by developer Dave Winer and net entrepeneur Adam Curry. The technology has taken off as companies and individuals have found out how easy it is to share audio content using podcasting.
