The National Music Publishers’ Association, which represents music publishers, is suing XM Satellite Radio.¬† Their suit, filed in federal court in New York last Thursday, claims that XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. violates copyright laws by providing a service which lets users store and replay music on certain devices.

On Friday, the United States Copyright Royalty Board announced new royalty rates for webcasts, effective from 2006 to 2010.
The new rates force webcasters to pay for each traditionally copyrighted song streamed to each user, and increase over the next few years as follows:
2006: $0.0008 to stream one song to one listener
2007: $.0011
2008: $.0014
2009: $.0018
2010: $.0019

The RIAA is increasing the pressure it puts on colleges and universities to restrict activities on school networks, sending thousands more complaints to top universities this school year than it did last year.

The RIAA has sent out a letter to ISP’s (PDF), updating them on the RIAA’s prelitigation policies, and asking them to provide the information that the RIAA needs to sue alleged copyright violators.
In the letter, the RIAA discusses:
Enlisting ISP’s to encourage customers to settle, instead of going to court;
