Satellite radio company XM revealed this week that in the third quarter, its losses were up a whopping 70 percent over last year.  Analysts blame the losses on a 22 percent drop in sales at chain retail outlets like Best Buy.

XM users appear to be experiencing a massive outage. According to reports, one of the XM’s satellites is down, and its repeaters are down due to a “software update.”

The National Music Publishers’ Association, which represents music publishers, is suing XM Satellite Radio.¬† Their suit, filed in federal court in New York last Thursday, claims that XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. violates copyright laws by providing a service which lets users store and replay music on certain devices.

Sirius Satellite Radio plans to buy U.S. rival XM Satellite Radio for $4.6 billion in stock, which could allow the combined company to raise prices, reduce costs and become profitable. Losses are growing at the two leaders in satellite radio, XM and Sirius.
Sirius lost $237.8 million for the period compared with a loss of $177.6 million during second quarter of 2005. XM Satellite Radio on July 27 reported a second-quarter loss of $231.7 million, up from losses of $148.8 million a year ago.
