New Podcasting Plugin For WordPress

Aug 8th, 2008 | By | Category: Podcasting Software

Blubrry’s Angelo Mandato has introduced a new option for publishing podcasts with WordPress, the Blubrry Powerpress Podcast Plugin. WordPress podcast publishers frustrated by the current state of the PodPress plugin may want to give Powerpress a try.

The Blubrry Powerpress interface lets you add/modify/remove podcast episodes from blog posts and includes a basic media player for your site.

Powerpress Features:

  • Easily add/modify/remove podcast episodes from blog posts
  • Integrated media player
  • iTunes RSS tags
  • iTunes album/cover art
  • upload new iTunes/RSS cover art
  • Ping iTunes
  • Media size detection
  • Duration detection (mp3 only)
  • 3rd party statistics integration

Powerpress Limitations:

  • Blubrry Powerpress does not allow you to include multiple enclosures in one blog post. This is because each podcatcher handles multiple enclosures differently. iTunes will download the first enclosure that it sees in the feed ignoring the rest. Other podcatchers and podcasting directories either pick up the first enclosure or the last in each post item. This inconsistency and combined with the fact that Dave Winer does not recommend multiple enclosures is why the Blubrry Powerpress does not support them.
  • Blubrry Powerpress does not include media statistics. This is not because Blubrry has its own statistics service, although that’s a good reason by itself. Maintaining and calculating statistics is a resource and server intensive task that would add bloat to an otherwise lightweight wordpress podcasting plugin. We recommend you use your media hosting’s statistics and you’re more than welcome to use the Blubrry Statistics service as well.

Thanks for the coverage the plugin is seeing amazing downloads, and we are getting a huge number of emails from podcasters thanking us for bringing this to the community. While we built the plugin to largely support our publishing services, we wanted to give all podcasters a choice out there. While Dan has done a great job with Podpress we want people to know that the plugin was not built to compete with Podpress.

The PowerPress Podcast Plugin for WordPress will serve those looking for a plugin that has all of the features needed to publish a podcast and get listed in iTunes. While we support third party stats in the plugin we did not see the need to build it stats as Rawvoice and has a robust and comprehensive podcast statistics solution that is available for free to our community members that has more data then will ever be supported in any podcast plugin.

In other words, “We did not see the need to build it stats as Rawvoice and has a robust and comprehensive podcast statistics solution that is available for free to our community members” is code for “We built this plugin not out of any philanthropic gesture for podcasters, but because we wanted to find a way to backdoor your stats data.”

Our communities and our tools are largely free. Those that belong to our communities and networks do so to not only get exposure but to also earn money with their podcast. Unlike other companies we have very strict internal company rules on looking at members stats.

The only time we pull numbers is when a show is being considered for a advertising deal or we pull download numbers to make payment to the podcaster.

Even when we are presenting a show to a advertiser we never disclose the statistics without the written permission of the podcaster. We do aggregate show numbers together thus a members numbers may be combined with a 100 other shows and presented as a whole to a advertiser. But no advertiser ever knows what a specific shows numbers are without their permission.

We have had these policies in place for 3 years. With over 1000 shows on advertising buys at this time we pride ourselves in not only having the best stats in the podcast space but also having stats that advertisers trust which keep them renewing quarter after quarter.

I would encourage you to read our terms of service they stand on their own. Our team is made up entirely of podcasters so we understand the sensitivity of each of our members shows and the stats associated.

I love this plugin. Nothing against Podpress. I’ve been using it for years. However, Dan has added more and more features that I didn’t need (podango). I just wanted a cool player that allowed people to stream it, download it, or play it in a new window, while doing my iTunes coding. Now if Todd and the boys can only make it so I can customize the color of the player. Also, Todd THAT’S IT. Add the ability to change the color, and then STOP. No more features. Great job.
